Bus falls into canal in India, 40 feared killed

At least 40 passengers were feared dead in southern India on Monday after a bus fell into a canal, police said.

They said the accident occurred around 3:00 a.m. (4:30 p.m. EST) in Bijapur district of Karnataka state, about 330 miles northwest of state capital Bangalore.

Rescue teams had reached the site, a police officer in Bangalore told Reuters by phone.
