Qatar wins Gulf Cup title
Goalkeeper Mohammed Saqr saved three shots in the penalty shootout to give Qatar its second Gulf Cup title on Friday. After a 1-1 draw with Oman, Qatar prevailed 5-4 on penalties to win the Middle East's most prestigious soccer title, their first in 12 years. Saqr's shootout heroics made up for a first-half blunder that led to Oman's only goal. It was the second time in eight days Qatar had beaten Oman, winning 2-1 in their final group match on Dec. 16. Rizq gave Qatar the lead in the fourth minute with his second goal of tournament, but Badr Al Baymani equalized in the 18th. Rizq opened the scoring by heading a rebound after a save by Bahrain goalkeeper Ali Al Habsy. Waleed Jasim curled a free kick in front of the net which was parried away by Habsy. Maymani equalized with a 30-meter shot after Saqr struck his own defender with a goal kick, sending the bounding ball to Maymani, who easily scored past an out-of-position Saqr. |
