Nicaragua destroys more missiles, as sought by US
Nicaragua on Wednesday destroyed 334 surface-to-air missiles it obtained from the Soviet Union in the 1980s, in keeping with a U.S. request that it scrap its missile stockpile, the army said.
The Central American nation this month assured visiting Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld it would destroy its stockpile of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles that Washington fears could fall into the hands of terrorists.
A batch of the SAM-7 missiles were put out of use at a firing range 50 miles west of Managua, the army said in a statement.
Nicaragua says it has now scrapped 1,000 of the missiles and will destroy the remaining 1,100 in the next 18 months. |
