New 'Canto-pop kings' list

Veteran Hong Kong singer Alan Tam recently branded Hacken Lee, Andy Hui, Leo Koo and Edmond Leung, "the new kings of pop."

Predictably, the announcement has aroused a great deal of controversy among pop fans.

Compared with the old kings of pop - Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, Aaron Kuok and Leon Lai - the new generation of pop kings have not demonstrated the degree of reputation or influence that many pop aficionados believe is necessary for them to deserve this title.

Fans are dissatisfied because it was not a result of a vote among fans and journalists.

Secondly, the new "pop kings" are less influential than the old ones and have failed to match the old ones in terms of appearance, singing and acting skills as well as social influence.

Thirdly, the new stars seem to be a little old and have not released any songs that are household tunes. Hacken Lee (born in December 1967) and Andy Hui (born in August 1967) are too old to be new pop kings, while Leo Koo and Edmond Leung are not considered to wield enough influence in the pop world.

According to Alan Tam, he made the announcement to attract public attention as Hong Kong's pop industry which has declined over recent years.
