Israeli troops kill 2 Palestinians in new violence

Updated: 2004-11-10 09:02

Israeli forces shot and killed two Palestinians on Tuesday in separate incidents in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Palestinian witnesses in Nablus said soldiers opened fire to disperse protesters throwing stones in the centre of the West Bank city, killing a 24-year-old man and wounding a second Palestinian in the stomach.

An army spokesman said troops shot at two Palestinians in the city's casbah after one opened fire on soldiers and a second set off an explosive device.

Israeli soldiers frequently raid parts of the West Bank city, a hotbed of militancy in a four-year-old Palestinian uprising.

An Israeli military source said a second Palestinian suspected of carrying explosives was shot dead as he was swimming off the Gaza shore near the Jewish settlement of Dugit. There was no immediate confirmation from Palestinian sources.
