The winner of China's 5th Golden Monkey Cartoon Work Award has been stripped of the honor due to suspicions of plagiarism.

The activity sponsor explains that the work, named "To Kill" bears striking resemblance to an Italian work.

The Guangdong native author Cai Lian has expressed that he employes such take but denied a sheer copying.

A netizen first spotted the resemblance of the two works soon after the prize was given in August.

The award is held bi-annually, and is the top prize for Chinese cartoonists.
