97 face punishment in milk powder deaths
Ninety-seven people in local governments and supervision departments have been held responsible for the April milk powder scandal in Anhui Province. An inspection team has found 49 companies, 1 illegal producer and 3 substandard companies across 11 provinces, Beijing and Shanghai connected to inferior quality milk. A dozen of them were involved in the Fuyang case that left at least 12 babies dead. The 97 people linked to the case, accused of not discovering or fully investigating the problem, will be punished after clarification of their specific role, said the Ministry of Supervision (MOS). At least a dozen babies in Fuyang died after being fed inferior milk powder in April. Hundreds of others suffered from "big head" disease, a medical complication stemming from malnutrition. The State Council organized an investigation group in late April to thoroughly look into the baby milk powder case, vowing to sternly punish individuals and officials involved. On August 5, local courts sentenced two wholesale dealers to prison for eight years and one year for selling substandard milk powder in Fuyang. On August 12, 54 Chinese substandard milk powder producers were shut down. Inspectors asked local governments and supervision departments to learn from the case and reinforce their sense of responsibility in order to safeguard people's health and life. The investigating team was organized by MOS and the General Administration of
Quality, Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. |
