A bus carrying a youth soccer team collided with a coal truck on a rural road in northern Colombia, killing 10 people aboard the bus, including eight of the young athletes, a sports official said Sunday.

A soccer official and a trainer also were killed in the crash near Bosconia, 350 miles north of Bogota, the capital, Leny Garcia, a youth soccer official of Sucre state who was on the bus, told local radio station Radio Caracol. Calls to local authorities for confirmation were not immediately answered.

The team was headed from Sincelejo, the state capital, to Bogota for an Under-17 soccer tournament when the crash occurred Saturday night. Witnesses said the truck driver apparently swerved to avoid a dead cow in the road and collided with the bus.
