Horror movie The Grudge kept its hold on the North American box office
chart over the Halloween weekend, according to studio estimates.
The Grudge, starring Buffy actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, made $22.4m
(£12.2m) from Friday to Sunday to keep it on top for a second week in a
row.
It is a remake of a recent Japanese haunted house thriller.
Oscar-tipped Ray, about late soul star Ray Charles, is in second with
$20.1m (£11m), Exhibitor Relations said.
Actor Jamie Foxx, recently seen starring alongside Tom Cruise in
Collateral, plays the blind singer who died in June.
Foxx is widely expected to be in line for an Oscar nomination in
January.
Ray is directed by Taylor Hackford, who also made An Officer and a
Gentleman and The Devil's Advocate, and spent 15 years trying to bring
Charles' story to the screen.
Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman's new film, Birth, was in
11th place with $1.7m (£925,000) in its first week, albeit
on a more restricted release.
In it, she plays a grieving wife who believes a
10-year-old boy has been reincarnated
as her husband. It was booed at Cannes for scenes where
she shares a bath and a kiss with the boy.
