Powell arrives in Beijing for 2-day visit
US Secretary of State Colin Powell arrived in Beijing Sunday evening, starting his fifth trip to China in four years.
He is due to meet President Hu Jintao and other Chinese leaders Monday on the second leg of his Asian tour, which has already taken him to Tokyo. Powell reiterated before his visit that the US position will not change and expressed clearly that the United States does not support "Taiwan independence" or any unilateral actions by either side. "We do not support independence. It would not serve the interests of the region. Any movement in that direction of a serious nature will have the potential for creating a real crisis in the region, and nobody benefits from that," Powell said. Taiwanese protest In Taipei, hundreds of people gathered in Kaohsiung to protest against the government's plan to buy millions of dollars worth of high-tech US weapons. They accused the government of using the package as a way to buy support from the United States. "The weapons are expensive and will become outdated when they are delivered," Tang Shu, a protest organizer, told the ETTV cable news station. |
