HK police arrest 97 in triad crackdown
Hong Kong Police have arrested 97 people in a three-day anti-triad operation in Tuen Mun that ended Sunday night. Code named Oilpainter, the crackdown began on Friday with an aim to curb the sources of income and activities of triad gangs in Tuen Mun, according to a Police press release. Police officers from various departments raided more than 68 black spots in the district, where illegal activities such as the sale of illicit oil, contraband cigarettes and pirated optical discs took place. During the blitz, the police arrested 50 men and 47 women aged 16 to 79 for possession of dangerous drugs and equipment fit for injecting dangerous drugs, operating a gambling establishment, illegal gambling, breach of conditions of stay, and offenses under the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance and Copyright Ordinance. A total of 96,400 contraband cigarettes, 4,400 liters of illicit oil, 390 copies of obscene optical discs, an axe, a machete, a small quantity of suspected dangerous drugs and some equipment for injecting dangerous drugs were seized during the operation. The total value of the seizures is estimated at about HK$245,000 (US$31,410). |
