Prince Norodom Sihamoni will be named king of Cambodia later on Thursday by the nine-member Throne Council, said the national assembly president in Phnom Penh.

"From this afternoon, the new king for Cambodia will be Samdech Sihamoni," Prince Norodom Ranarith told reporters upon his return from Beijing, where he met with Sihamoni and his father, Norodom Sihanouk, who announced his abdication last week.

"All nine members of the Royal Throne Council support Sihamoni as the new king," Ranarith said.

The council will convene at 4 p.m. local time (0900 GMT) to vote for their choice of Cambodia's next king. It groups Ranarith, Prime Minister Hun Sen, the acting head of state Chea Sim, and influential Buddhist leaders.
