Megawati calls for support to new leader
Indonesian outgoing President Megawati Soekarnoputri Tuesday called on citizens to accept and support the newly-elected leaders from the Sept. 20 elections. She made her first public speech after Monday's official announcement of the election result. "Whoever wins the election must be well accepted because the victory belongs to all of us, it is the victory of the whole people," Megawati said in a speech during the opening ceremony of the Indonesian Military (TNI)'s 59th anniversary held at the Halim Perdanakusumah Airport. "We have different choices but we all share the common aspiration of a brighter future for this country," she said. Megawati, who didn't explicitly concede defeat, said the smooth and safe presidential election was one of the biggest achievements of the country. The General Election Commission announced Monday that the presidential election was won by former general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who obtained 60.62 percent of the votes ahead Megawati with 39.38 percent. |
