China one step from historic Paralympic victory in Athens
With only two days left for the 12th Paralympic Games in the Greek capital, China is only one step short of a historic victory in the games in Athens on September 26 of sports by elite athletes with disabilities worldwide. After eight days' heated competitions, China stood an unsurpassable leader in the games medal standings -- 52 gold, 43 silver, 28 bronze for a medal total of 123. Britain ranked a distant second, with a medal credit of 31-27-26, and Canada third with a medal record of 24-18-21. The US, Austrilia and Ukraine ranked from fourth to sixth in the table. The Chinese are leading the medal table in both track and field and swimming -- the two sports that have the most gold medals on offer. By Sunday night, China has a medal credit of 20-18-12 in athletics, followed by South American on 9-6-4 and Ukraine 9-4-5. And in swimming, China stood ahead of others with a medal score of 17-15-6, followed by the United States with 15-3-15 and Britain on 14-19-14. And with an impressive achievements in the level of organization and competition though, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced four more doping cases here on Sunday, bringing to seven anti-doping violation cases out of 529 tests carried out so far in Athens. Monday, the penultimate day of the 12-day games with 11 days for competitions proper, will see actions in athletics, wheelchair basketball, swimming, table tennis, football (7-a-side), cycling road and powerlifting. |
