Roddick to open U.S. Davis Cup bid against Belarus (Agencies) Updated: 2004-09-24 09:13 U.S. world number two Andy
Roddick will face Belarus' Vladimir Voltchkov in the opening singles tie of
their Davis Cup semi-final on Friday.
The hard-serving Roddick is hoping to lead the U.S. to their first Davis Cup
final since 1997 while Belarus are competing in their first Davis Cup
semi-final.
Olympic silver medallist Mardy Fish will meet top Belarus player Max Mirnyi
in Friday's second singles match at the Family Circle Tennis Center.
In a surprise move on Thursday, Belarus team captain Sergei Teterin named
teenager Alexander Skrypko over an injured Voltchkov to play doubles with Mirnyi
against American twins Mike and Bob Bryan on Saturday.
Teterin said a final decision would not be made until after Voltchkov, who
has a left wrist sprain, plays singles on Friday.
Voltchkov will meet Fish and Roddick will play Mirnyi in Sunday's reverse
singles.
Spain are hosting France in the other semi-final this weekend with the winner
progressing to the final in December.
