Beijing condemns Taiwan's hypocritical name plot
Beijing condemned on Wednesday a proposal by Taiwan authorities to use the island's official name "Republic of China" less often, calling it hypocritical deception and a push towards formal independence. "It exposes once again Chen Shui-bian's splittist plot for Taiwan's independence," Zhang Mingqing, spokesman for the policymaking Taiwan Affairs Office, told a news conference. Zhang was commenting on the propsal by "Taipei Foreign Ministry" to use the name "Taiwan" more frequently to distinguish it from Beijing. The ministry stressed that Taiwan's official name would remain "Republic of China". But Zhang remained unconvinced, denouncing as hypocritical deception Chen's pledge in his second inaugural speech in May not to change the official name. The spokesman warned Chen not to test the central government's patience. "If he violates our bottom line, we will safeguard our national sovereignty
and territorial integrity at all cost," he said. |
