Bar owner jailed over ecstasy death A Shenzhen bar owner was sentenced to three years in jail, and he and his partner were ordered to pay compensation of 170,000 yuan (US$20,400) to the family of a young man who died in his bar after taking the drug known as ecstasy. A Daily Sunshine report said Mai Jiali, the bar owner, offered ecstasy free to patrons attending the opening of Xingyue Bar on July 6 last year. Mai Weiguang, the victim, went to the bar at 11 p.m. to kill time with friends from Tangwei Village. The paper said Mai Weiguang had told Mai Zhiyuan, the bar owner’s business partner, that he was in a bad mood and had already taken three ecstasy pills. They had not seemed to work, so he took another two. Later, he was found in a coma lying on a sofa at about 2 a.m. and taken to Gongming People's Hospital, where he died. The bar owner volunteered to pay compensation of 150,000 yuan to the victim's family, who rejected the offer and took him to court instead. The court said the victim was also at fault since he as an adult should have known that taking ecstasy was illegal.
