At least 13 people died and 20 were injured in a pile-up involving a Spanish coach and 10 cars on the Bayonne-Bordeaux highway in south-west France, the regional road information centre said.

The crash at Belin-Beliet in France's Gironde region 40km from Bordeaux led to the closure of the A63 motorway on one of the busiest weekends of the year.

An AFP correspondent said some 130 firemen, 24 ambulances and fire engines were on the scene to take care of the victims.

Some had to be cut out of their smashed vehicles.

The Spanish-registered coach which was carrying several north African passengers was overturned beside the road.

All the vehicles involved were on the same side of the motorway but the reasons for the accident, which occurred around midnight (AEST) on Saturday, were unclear, police said.
