Hu Jia crowned in men's 10m platform in Athens

Hu Jia, Sydney silver medallist from China, was crowned in the men's 10m platform final here on Saturday, finishing the competition with 748.08 points.

Mathew Helm from Australia, qualified first in the semi-final, clinched the silver medal with 730.56 points, while Chinese diving star Tian Liang was upset to win the bronze medal by a slightest margin of 0.90 points.

Defending champion Tian, fully exerting his diving talents in the first two rounds, toppled Helm by leading 24.24 points after the second round.

However, the Athens synchronized 10m platform champion faced the toughest time in the third round, in which he performed an armstand attempt 626B (DD 3.5), winning only 73.50 from the judges.

While his strongest opponent Helm finished a perfect attempt for 94.08 points, shortening the margin to negligible 3.66.

In the fourth round, both Tian and Helm failed to control their splashes, while Tian's compatriot Hu Jia exploded in the round and clinched the second place from the 4th by finishing a fabulous dive 407B (DD 3.5), awarded with 93.45 points.

Hu kept his excellent form in the firth and sixth rounds, awarded by the judges with four 10 and five 10 respectively for his impeccable last two attempts, 307C (DD 3.4) and 5253B (DD 3.4), winning his first gold in the Olympic Games.
