Canada to host under-20 soccer worlds in 2007

Canada has been chosen to host the 2007 World Youth Championship, a soccer tournament second only in size and scope to the World Cup, according to a Canadian Press report Monday.

The Canadian Soccer Association has invited FIFA vice-president Jack Warner to Toronto to make a "major announcement" Tuesday morning.

Reports also maintain that securing FIFA's under-20 men's championship guarantees 35 million Canadian dollars (US$27 million) in federal and provincial funds towards the construction of the 25,000-seat outdoor facility.

FIFA, though, prefers championship finals be played in venues boasting 30,000-plus seats, thus making Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium in Canada's western province of Alberta the logical choice.

The World Youth Championship has been held every two years since 1977 with the next event slated for the Netherlands in 2005.

Canada previously hosted the inaugural women's under-19 championship in 2002 and the under-17 men's tourney in 1987.
