Swanky, new airport opens in Guangzhou
The New Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou, capital of southern Guangdong Province, officially went into operation yesterday, replacing the old one as the local airfield.
Situated north of Guangzhou, the new airport covers 15 square kilometers, 4.68 times the size of the existing Baiyun Airport, which is also north of Guangzhou and 17 kilometers away from the new one. The old airport has long been overburdened by increasing passengers and cargo liners. The new airport can accommodate 25 million passengers a year, compared with the previous 12.79 million by the old airport, with 67 planes departing and landing involving 9,300 passengers every hour. The first phase of construction took three years and 10 months. The new airport currently has a 350,000-square-meter terminal, two runways, and 66 aprons.
