Pepper spray for Shanghai police (Agencies) Updated: 2004-08-05 09:06 Shanghai will begin equipping
police with pepper spray later this month, as cases involving violence against
officers increases.
Police officers, including traffic police, will add spray canisters and
waterproof torches to their arsenal, which already includes hand-held radios,
handcuffs and batons. They do not carry handguns.
The spray would be used only in extreme situations to deal with dangerous
criminals, the South China Morning Post said, quoting a Shanghai newspaper.
The chemicals will cause weeping and coughing.
The measure reflected Shanghai's determination to better protect its police
force.
