Mia Hamm scored one goal and set up two others as the United States women's
soccer team beat China 3-1 in their final Olympics warm-up in East Hartford,
Connecticut on Sunday.
Abby Wambach set up Hamm's goal and scored her own. Aly Wagner opened the
scoring before a crowd of 15,093 at Rentschler Field.
The United States opened the scoring when Hamm flicked the ballto Wagner, who
sent a left-footed shot into the net in the 14th minute.
Less than 20 minutes later, Wambach found a streaking Hamm, who scored from
12 meters for her 151st international goal.
The Athens Olympics will be Hamm's last major international competition. She
said the US team is well prepared.
China opened the second half with a goal in the 49th minute. After goalkeeper
Briana Scurry failed to completely clear a free kick out of the penalty area,
Han Duan crossed the ball back to defender Fan Yunjie. Fan beat a lunging Julie
Foudy from close range to make it 2-1.
In a match that featured nine yellow cards, Wambach headed home the final
goal off a Hamm corner kick in the 69th minute.
The United States is 14-10-8 all-time against China, including the gold-medal
match at the 1996 Olympics and 1999 World Cup final.Their record is 15-2-1 this
year, including a 7-2-1 mark against teams in the 10-team Olympic field.
The United States begins Olympic group play on August 11 against Greece. It
also will meet Brazil on August 14 and Australia on August 17.
