A suicide car bomb has exploded outside a police station in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, killing at least four people and wounding 34, the Iraqi police say.

The car detonated in an eastern district of the city, destroying parts of the police station, houses, police cars and a dozen civilian vehicles, the police said on Sunday.

The dead were police and the wounded were a mix of police and civilians, they said.

Insurgents have repeatedly attacked Iraqi police and National Guardsmen over the past year, blowing up recruiting centres, barracks and police stations in an effort to kill those seen as collaborating with U.S. forces.

On Wednesday 70 people were killed and more than 50 wounded in a car bomb attack near a police recruiting centre in Baquba, north of Baghdad.
