A-Mei plans benefit concert for Taiwan storm victims

Taiwan pop diva Chang Hui-mei plans to give a benefit concert in Taibei for the victims of tropical storm Mindulle on Thursday.

The storm caused widespread destruction two weeks ago, killing 29 people and causing flooding and landslides in mountainous parts of central Taiwan - home to many aboriginal tribes.

Chang, also known as A-mei, said her own aboriginal origins inspired her plans for the benefit concert.

'Because I am an aborigine myself, I hope I can do things to help them,' she told reporters while taking a break strumming a guitar at a recording studio. 'I can't say how much I will be able to do, but I must come out and do things myself.'

The concert is free, but audience members will each be asked to donate US$30, she said. Because the concert's venue in a new shopping district in eastern Taipei has a capacity of 500 people, her concert is expected to net about US$15,000.

Taiwan's aborigines total about 400,000 people out of the island's population of 23 million. Most Taiwanese are ethnic Chinese who started migrating from Chinese Mainland in the 17th century.
