Storng quake hits northern Taiwan
A strong earthquake shook buildings in downtown Taipei Tuesday, but no damage or casualties were immediately reported. The 5.8-magnitude quake hit under the ocean, 50 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of Su'ao, the weather bureau said. Su'ao is a fishing harbor on Taiwan's northeastern coast, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of Taipei. The weather bureau said the temblor was felt throughout northern Taiwan. Quakes frequently rattle the island, but most are minor and cause little or
no damage. However, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed
more than 2,300 people. |
