Chinese players exit Wimbledon (Xinhua) Updated: 2004-06-30 14:00
Tennis players from the Chinese mainland have bid farewell to this year's
Wimbledon after suffering defeats in the third round of women's doubles and
mixed doubles on Tuesday.
Top Chinese pair Zheng Jie and Yan Zi lost in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 to the
fifth seeds, South Africa's Liezel Huber and Japan's Ai Sugiyama.
Meanwhile, China's Sun Tiantian and Argentina's Gaston Etlis were beaten by
the 4th seeds of the tournament, Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman and Rennae Stubbs of
Australia 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 and failed to make to the last 8.
In Wimbledon's junior competitions, China's Zhang Shuai and Liu Wan-ting lost
in the opening round of girls' doubles to Chan Yung-Jan of Chinese Taipei and
Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-1, 6-4.
Sun Shengnan teamed up with Wen-Hsin Hsu of Chinese Taipai for the first
round of the girls' doubles, but they lost out to an American pair.
This was a disappointing result for Sun Shengnan, who had won the same
competition at this year's Australian Open.
