German Markus Merk will referee the final of the European soccer championship in Lisbon on Sunday, organisers announced on Monday.

Wednesday's semi-final between hosts Portugal and the Netherlands will go to Anders Frisk of Sweden, and Thursday's semi-final between Greece and the Czech Republic will be refereed by Pierluigi Collina of Italy.

Merk, 42, refereed the Group B opener between France and England where he gave a penalty to both sides, and the 2-2 draw between Sweden and Denmark in Group C which sent both countries into the quarter-finals at the expense of Italy.

The Kaiserslautern dentist also refereed the 2003 Champions League final between AC Milan and Juventus. He has been a Bundesliga referee since 1988 and a FIFA referee since 1992.
