A 13-year old girl, paralyzed due to an accident in playing karting two years ago, was compensated some 2.9 million yuan recently, the highest amount of compensation for personal injury ever reported in China.

The accident happened on October 2, 2002 when Yang Yang (not her real name) and her family went to an amusement park in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, to ride karting. Minutes into riding, her hair was unexpectedly engulfed by the uncovered driving axle of the karting. Her backbone was injured and Yang Yang was paralyzed.

She was certified to suffer first degree handicap in Feburary 2003 and would have to spend the rest of her life with wheelchairs and diapers.

Yang Yang also needs to attend rehabilitation treatment that costs around 110,000 yuan per year. Sichuan University Huaxi Hospital proved April 2003 that she may need at least 20 years of treatment to recover.

Her parents then took the karting manufacturer, operator and the entertainment park to court, asking for a compensation of 3.5 million yuan.

The Chengdu Intermediate People's Court ruled that she has the right to compensation, and decided that the manufacturer has to pay 2.07 million yuan and the operator has to pay 885,790 yuan for Yang Yang's injury.

This is said to the highest amount of compensation for personal injury in China, according to a Chengdu Daily report on Friday.
