FM refutes US claims of negative relations

China on Thursday criticized a US report it said was "full of Cold War mentality."

The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, which advises the US Congress, recently released its annual report, and alleged that some developing trends in US-China relations have negatively impacted on the long-term economic and security interests of the United States. It suggested the US Government adjust its policy and press China using economic and technical levers.

"The report, viewing China and Sino-US relations in a hostile way, has seriously misled the public," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue at Thursday's regular news briefing, in response to reporters' questions.

Zhang said the report also interferes with China's internal affairs in economic and trade matters, and on the questions of Taiwan and Hong Kong.

"The purpose of the report is to advocate a 'China threat,' interfere and undermine exchanges and co-operation between China and the United States," Zhang said. "We are strongly opposed to that."

Zhang urged the US Government to clearly state its opposition to the report's so-called suggestions and to maintain an overall perspective of Sino-US relations and bilateral co-operation.

Zhang also denied allegations in the report that Beijing was allowing the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to ship missiles and other weapons through China.

"Not a single country will agree that carriers of weapons of mass destruction go through its territory," she said.

Zhang said China's stance on anti-proliferation is explicit.

"We have enacted comprehensive laws and regulations and taken effective measures," she said.

"It is our major goal to realize a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula when we try to solve the nuclear issue of the DPRK," she added.

Zhang said China's efforts on this issue have won recognition from the international community.

The commission reportedly accused China of continuing to help "weapons of mass destruction-related programmes in countries of concern... despite repeated promises to end such activities and repeated impositions of US sanctions."
