Chronology-Recent major bomb attacks in Iraq

Dozens were killed and wounded in suicide car bomb attack outside an Iraqi army base in Baghdad on Thursday, officials said.

Here is a chronology of some of the major bombings in Iraq since the head of the Iraqi governing council was killed in a car bomb attack in May.

May 17 - A suicide car bomb in Baghdad kills the head of Iraq's Governing Council Abdul Zahra Othman Mohammad, a Shi'ite Muslim also known as Izzedin Salim, dealing a major blow to the US coalition.

June 1 - A suicide car bomber blows himself up at a US military base near Baiji, north of Baghdad, killing at least 11 Iraqis and wounding 20 others and two American soldiers.

June 8 - A car bomb explodes in the centre of the northern Iraq near the mayor's office in Mosul. The US military said at least nine Iraqis were killed and 25 wounded.

June 13 - A suicide car bomber kills up to 12 Iraqis, including four policemen, near a US-Iraqi base in Baghdad.

June 14 - Five foreign contractors are among 13 people killed in a suicide car bombing in Baghdad. Jama'at al-Tawhid and Jihad, a group headed by suspected al Qaeda operative Abu Musab al-Zarqawi claimed responsibility the next day.

June 17 - A suicide car bomb explodes at the gates to an Iraq army recruiting base near Baghdad's Muthanna airport, where US troops are based. Iraqi officials say at least 25 are killed and 50 wounded.
