Three Gorges dam to face rainfall's challenge
Experts Wednesday urged relevant departments to make every effort to ensure the safety of the Three Gorges Dam and its reservoir area, as heavy rainfall is forecast to hit those areas.
According to the latest weather forecast by the State Meteorological Bureau, an intense rainfall will hit the whole Yangtze River valley from west to east starting on June 18, and after June 23, another rainfall will hit partial areas at the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. From June 10 to 15, northwest areas of Hunan Province and Chongqing Municipality received 50-70 mm of rainfall, making the water level at the Three Gorges reservoir keep rising. Experts said the Yangtze River valley is approaching flood season. Departments in charge of the Three Gorges project should properly drop electricity generation and let more water down to the lower reaches in an attempt to ensure the safety of the gigantic dam. |
