World number one Roger Federer beat sixth seed Mardy Fish of the United States 6-0, 6-3 on Sunday to defend his title at the 791,750-euro ATP grasscourt tournament at Halle, Germany on Sunday.

With the title, Federer's fifth of this season and 16th of his career, the top-seeded Swiss confirmed his status as favorite to defend his Wimbledon title later this month.

The 22-year-old Federer has won the Australian Open, Dubai, Indian Wells and Hamburg before crowned at Halle.

Big-serving Fish, who was the only man to take a set off Federer at Wimbledon last year, was unable to find his range against Federer who passed him at the net time and again in the first set.

Fish, 22, put up some resistance in the second but was broken in the sixth game and went down to his fourth loss in as many meetings with Federer after 57 minutes on court.

"I'm happy to have been able to play solid tennis all week. I really enjoyed playing here. It's the best possible preparation for Wimbledon," said Federer.

Fish predicted that his rival looked good for a successful Wimbledon defence. "He played inspired tennis," added the American.
