Olympic flame leaves Rio de Janeiro Monday
The Olympic flame will leave Monday the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro after being carried Sunday across northern and southern areas of this locality in a run of relays that included more than 120 people, among them athletes, common people and celebrities. The Olympic symbol was placed in a room of the Marriot Hotel in Copacabana, south of the city, and will remain in Rio till 07:00 p.m. local time when it will continue its world journey in the Zeus 747 Boeing that will head for Mexico City. The torch is under vigilance and without permission to get nearit, but in the hotel there is a replica that is at all times watched by curious passers-by who video tape it and take pictures. Although it has not been confirmed yet, the flame might be carried again across the city on Monday afternoon. "If we were in any other city of the world I would say that theflame will not leave the hotel, but being Rio de Janeiro who knowsif she is interested in one more turn to see those so pretty images of our city," the Brazilian Olympic Committee InternationalRelations Director Carlos Roberto Osorio said. The local Olympic authorities said that the participation of the citizens of Rio de Janeiro in the Olympic fire was a great event. "All the representatives of the committee for the Athens Olympic Games were excited with the event and impressed by the affection shown by the Brazilian people for the Olympic ideals andmovement," Osorio said. In the show offered at the Flamengo Park in the end of the torch's run, the official branded the event as unforgettable and said that Rio de Janeiro and Brazil should keep on dreaming of organizing Olympic Games.
