British number one Anne Keothavong scored her first WTA Tour victory on
Monday at Edgbaston's Wimbledon warm-up event, beating Spain's Marta Marrero 6-1
5-7 7-6.
"It's great to finally get it out of the way," she said. "I've played really
well in Challengers and even qualified for some WTA tournaments but it's great
to finally get a win here.
"It was a long match so I'm relieved to get through. It was a great win for
me as she is ranked so much higher, so it's a big confidence boost for
Wimbledon."
Marrero, at 60 in the world, is ranked 132 places above Keothavong.
In other action, three of the four seeded players were knocked out on day
one.
French ninth seed Emilie Loit was the only seeded player to survive Monday's
first round, defeating British wildcard Jane O'Donoghue 6-4 7-5.
Eleventh seed Tina Pisnik fell to American qualifier Kelly McCain 4-6 6-4
6-4, 12th seed Magui Serna was beaten by Luxembourg's Anne Kremer 6-2 6-2 and
Russian 14th seed Lina Krasnoroutskaya let slip a one-set lead to lose 3-6 6-3
6-0 to Venezuelan Milagros Sequera.
France's Marion Bartoli was forced to retire in the early stages of her first
round match against Italy's Flavia Pennetta with a left hip injury.
The match was tied at 1-1 in the first set when Bartoli could no longer
continue. The French player was immediately taken to the hospital to have the
injury looked at.
