1st-quarter machinery goods trade up 53.36%

China recorded US$47.22 billion in foreign trade of machinery goods during the first quarter this year, up 53.36 percent year-on-year. according to figures released by China Machinery Building Industry on Wednesday.

The figure represents 19.69 percent of China's overall foreign trade, up 1.44 percentage points over 18.25 percent for the same quarter of 2003, said a leading official with the federation.

Southern Guangdong Province, eastern Jiangsu Province and Shanghai Municipality, and Zhejiang Province, also in East China, are the four biggest players in machinery sector as their combined export volume of machinery goods stood at US$12.639 billion, or three quarters of the country's total export of the machinery products.

China's quarterly imports of machinery goods exceeded US$30 billion for the first time during January-March period this year, up 56.8 percent year-on-year, said the official.

The imports made up 24.58 percent of the country's total import trade during the three-month period, up 1.6 percentage points over the same period last year.
