AC Milan celebrated its 17th scudetto by rising to a record 82 points with a 4-2 win over Brescia at the last round of Italian Serie A league on Sunday while Inter Milan grabbed a Champions League berth by beating Empoli 3-2.
The other three Champions slots were already assigned to champions Milan, Roma and Juventus. Parma beat Udinese 4-3 to qualify for the UEFA Cup along with Lazio, which beat Modena 2-1. Udinese was already qualified for the competition. Empoli and Modena were relegated to Serie B, joining Ancona, while fourth-last team Perugia beat Ancona 1-0 to earn a play-off with the sixth-placed team in Serie B. The top five Serie B sides will be promoted to boost the top division to 20 clubs. Milan's striker Andriy Shevchenko scored again Sunday to lead the final scorer standings with 24 goals ahead of Parma's Alberto Gilardino, who scored a hat-trick against Udinese to overtake Roma's Francesco Totti, 23 goals to 20. Roberto Baggio, 37, ended his career with a standing ovation against Milan. During his time at Vicenza, Fiorentina, Juventus, Milan, Bologna, Inter and Brescia the Golden Ponytail scored 205 Serie A goals, the fifth-highest total ever, and won 56 Italian caps. Juve coach Marcello Lippi also ended his career at the club Sunday after two spells in which he won five league titles and eight other trophies including a Champions League and a UEFA Cup. Lippi is tipped to take over from Giovanni Trapattoni as Italy coach after Euro 2004.
