Telecom industry develops fast in Tibet

The telecommunications industry developed rapidly in the Tibet Autonomous Region last year, according to the Department of the Information Industry in the region.

Statistics from the department showed that the telecommunications business in the region saw a revenue of 981.57 million yuan (US$118.3 million) in 2003, rising 38.68 percent from the previous year.

Telephone users in the region reached 606,300 households, climbing 48 percent from the previous year. Currently, every 100 people in the region posses 23.74 telephones.

It is expected that the telecommunications network will cover all the townships in the region by the end of 2004.
