Students hospitalized for possible lead poisoning (newsphoto) Updated: 2004-03-19 23:56
A doctor at Beijing's Chaoyang Hospital helps a student from Chengde, North
China's Hebei Province, move into his ward Friday March 19, 2004. He is one
of 164 primary school students from Chengde who came to Beijing to
be checked for possible lead poisoning. The hospital found that all of them had
been in contact with lead. Many students complained of such symptoms
as stomach-ache, fever and sweating since March 15. It is suspected that waste disposed
by a mineral factory -- less than 500 meters from the school -- is to
blame for the poisoning. The case is still under investigation.
