An explosion destroyed a section of a nine-story apartment building in the northern Russian city of Arkhangelsk early Tuesday, killing at least two people and injuring eight, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

It cited Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Viktor Beltsov as saying at least 75 people could be trapped in the rubble.

A duty officer in Arkhangelsk said that a gas leak was the likely cause of the blast.

ITAR-Tass said that rubble from the building was piled three stories high.
