Film star sues Chow Yun-fat Konka Hong Kong film actor Chow Yun-fat is suing Shenzhen-based TV maker Konka, claiming HK$6 million yuan (US$770,000) compensation for continuing to use his photo for promotion after the contract had expired. The case went before the Shenzhen Municipal Intermediate People¡¯s Court on Tuesday, but a decision has not yet been reached. The plaintiff, Chow¡¯s agent company, said it signed a one-year contract with Konka in 1999, with Chow to promote Konka cell phones, appearing in TV commercials and newspaper advertisements. Under the contract, Konka was to return to the agent company all the TV commercials and advertisements involving Chow after the contract expired in Sept. 2000 or pay HK$6 million. Chow¡¯s agent said Konka had apologized and paid Chow 735,000 yuan compensation in 2001 for continuing to use Chow¡¯s image in advertisements in Guangzhou. But in Oct. 2002, it found Konka cell phone posters featuring Chow¡¯s image in Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport. But this time Konka refused to apologize and pay compensation. The defendant claimed Konka had fulfilled its contract obligations as agreed by launching a nationwide cancellation of its cell phone advertisements using Chow¡¯s image after the contract expired. But posters in international flight lounges were beyond the reach of Konka cleaners because these areas were banned for people without special passes. |
