Corrupt provincial party official jailed for 12 years (Xinhua) Updated: 2004-03-04 10:47
Chai Wangqun, former head of the publicity department of
Yunnan Province in southwest China, was sentenced 12 years in prison on
Wednesday after being convicted of taking bribes.
The Intermediate People's Court of Kunming found that from 1992 to
1996, when Chai was serving in the Organization Department of the Communist Party
of China (CPC), he accepted 1.26 million yuan (US$17,370) in various currencies,
an apartment and two watches in exchange for illegal qualification promotion of
a Shenyang-based company.
Chai was head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Provincial
Committee of Yunnan Province before he was arrested in August 2002. He was also
fined 100,000 yuan (US$12,200).
