Desperate demand for overdue payment (newsphoto) Updated: 2004-02-10 10:39
Some 30 workers threaten to jump off the
two-story building if their boss refuses to pay their overdue wages in
Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, Feb. 9, 2004. The workers said
they were forced to resort to the desperate action because the boss of the
Longgong Bathing and Relaxation Center has delayed their payments for up
to one year and owe them more than 300,000 yuan. Defaulting on payments
has long been a problem curbing the income rise of the rural population
and a "chronic illness" affecting and undermining social stability.
