Boston-Power Inc, a US emerging specialist of lithium-ion batteries for laptops, plans to expand the mass production of its batteries through a partnership with Hong Kong-based GP Batteries.

GP Batteries is Asia's number one battery manufacturer outside Japan and the top consumer battery provider in China. Boston-Power's new products will be produced in GP's facilities in Taiwan Province.

The move is following Boston-Power's first production base in Shenzhen, cooperated with HYB Battery Co Ltd, one of the leading lithium-ion battery manufacturer across the country.

Founded in 2005, Boston-Power has developed Sonata lithium-ion battery for laptop, its first product series. The drop-in battery has rolled off the production line late last year in Shenzhen.

Establishing a new benchmark in safety, cycle life and performance, Sonata is the only battery architected to last the typical three-year life of a laptop.

"Boston-Power identified several years ago the fundamental challenges and opportunities in laptop battery, and dedicated ourselves to developing a whole-system, application-specific design approach that would establish new levels of safety, performance and environmental sustainability," says Christina Lampe-Onnerud, founder and CEO of Boston-Power, during her trip with a clean-energy trade mission headed by US Assistant Secretary of Commerce David Bohigian in Beijing.

She also says that eventually the company's products could be used to power an extensive range of end-applications – from consumer electronics such as mobile phones, PDAs to even hybrid electric vehicles.
