( 2003-08-02 11:02) (Xinhua)

Six policemen convicted of taking bribes from a "snake head", or people smuggler, had their appeals rejected by the Intermediate People's Court of Lishui city, east China's Zhejiang province, on Friday.

Wang Zhangfu, Liu Chengfeng, Xu Yongning, Liang Xuwei, Lin Huanyu and Zhao Qintang, were accused of taking bribes from Chen Minren, a so-called "snake head" who organized illegal emigration trips.

Wang, an ex-senior officer of Lishui City municipal police station, together with Liu, Xu and Liang, three former senior policemen in Suichang county, Lishui, had granted passports to 118 people at the request of Chen from June 2000 to July 2002, the court found.

Wang had taken a bribe of 11,200 US dollars and 3,000 yuan from Chen, while Liu received 25,000 yuan.

On June 30, Wang was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison, and Liu was sentenced to a year, while Xu got a reprieve of six months. Liang was given a non-custodial sentence.

Lin accepted a bribe of 48,841 yuan and Zhao received 10,000 US dollars from Chen. The former took a bribe of 71,000 yuan from other people and the latter accepted other 90,000 yuan and 2,000 US dollars.

On June 30, the court sentenced both Lin and Zhao to ten years of imprisonment.
