China, India confirm friendship
( 2002-01-16 00:55) (1)

Visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Tuesday arrived at India's financial centre Mumbai to continue his five-day visit to this South Asian country.

Development of the friendly co-operation between China and India relies on the mutual understanding among their people, Zhu said while meeting G.M.C. Balayogi, Speaker of Lok Sabha, lower house of India's parliament.

They met Tuesday in New Delhi before Zhu left for Bombay. Zhu is the first Chinese Premier who visits India in a decade.

Zhu called on enhanced exchanges between the two parliaments and their peoples to promote mutual understanding and bilateral co-operation while maintaining high-level governmental exchanges.

The National People's Congress of China and the Indian parliament have both established a group dedicated to promoting bilateral friendship.

Exchanges between the Chinese and Indian parties, as an important component of bilateral relations, will play a positive role in promoting mutual understanding and friendship, Zhu said in his meeting with Sonia Gandhi, President of Indian National Congress.

Zhu also met Najma Heptulla, vice-chairman of Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India's parliament Tuesday in New Delhi.

During his meeting with India's Minister of External Affairs Jaswant Singh on Monday in New Delhi, Zhu said there is great potential for the promotion of bilateral relations and economic co-operation.

There is no problem between the two countries that cannot be settled, Zhu said.

The world has changed a lot since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1950 and peace and co-operation have become a trend of the world today, Zhu said.

Singh said the India-China friendship serves the interests of both countries and it is impossible and incorrect for the two countries to constitute a threat to each other.
