Former mayor of Shenyang goes on trial for bribery
( 2001-08-16 09:33) (7)

Former mayor of Shenyang Mu Suixin

The former mayor of Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning province, went on trial for massive corruption on Wednesday.

Mu Suixin was accused of accepting bribes and not being able to adequately explain how he came to own a huge amount of property, according to reports.

Mu, who resigned from his post as mayor late last year and was expelled from the communist party in June, is suspected of having taken massive kickbacks for years while in positions of power.

The case was heard in the Intermediate People's Court of Dalian, the report said.

Six other Shenyang goverment staff and two people accused of offering bribes were also on trial.

Last year, vice-mayor Ma Xiangdong was arrested for allegedly taking bribes and squandering about 40 million yuan (US$4.8 million) of state funds in gambling sprees in casinos in Macau.

Since then a growing number of people have been implicated in the scandal, including the deputy head of the intermediate people's court and Mu's ex-wife, local media reported previously.

Ma and several other city government officials are also scheduled to go on trial soon. The trial will be held in east China's Jiangsu province for legal reasons, the report said.

Earlier this month, two deputy court presidents in Shenyang were dismissed for taking bribes.

President Jiang Zemin has said frequently that rampant corruption risks undermining support for the party.

China has executed a string of officials for corruption in the past few years. The highest-ranked was Cheng Kejie, former vice-chairman of the National People's Congress, China's parliament.
