"Lord of the Rings" takes PGA top honor ( 2004-01-19 16:18) (Xinhua)
The fantasy hit "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" on Sunday won
the top honor from the Producers Guild of America (PGA), becoming the
front-runner for the Oscars.
Barrie Osborne, a producer for "Lord of the Rings," accepted the PGA's Darryl
F. Zanuck Award for Theatrical Motion Picture at the 15th annual Producers Guild
Awards for Motion Pictures and Television.
The third and final installment of Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R.
Tolkien's epic fantasy has won several major critics awards so far this year,
including best film award from the New York City film critics and a best
director award for Jackson from the Los Angeles film critics guild.
In the past, 10 of the 14 previous winners of the PGA award have gone on to
win the best picture Oscar. The PGA award has since been regarded as a key
indicator in the race for the top Oscar prize, which will be honored on Feb. 29.
The "Ring" trilogy is one of the most successful films with thefirst two
installments bringing in about 1.8 billion dollars worldwide and the third
grossing more than 770 million US dollars since its Christmas opening.
In other PGA awards, "Six Feet Under" was named best TV dramatic series, "Sex
and the City" the best comedy series, "My House in Umbria" best TV movie or
mini-series and "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" best reality or game show
series.
