HK retail sales up 5.2 pct in November 2003
( 2004-01-08 21:54) (Xinhua)

Hong Kong's retail sales in  November 2003 was estimated at 14.1 billion HK dollars (1.8  billion US dollars), up 5.2 percent over the same month in 2002,  said the Census and Statistics Department Thursday.

The department said sales of electrical goods and photographic  equipment increased the most, by 32.9 percent, followed by sales  of miscellaneous consumer durable goods by 19.9 percent, furniture and fixtures by 15.9 percent, and footwear, allied products and  other clothing accessories by 15.6 percent.

Among other gainers of sales were jewelry, watches and clocks,  and valuable gifts, increased by 8.5 percent, commodities in  department stores by 6.4 percent, miscellaneous consumer goods by  5.5 percent, and food, alcoholic drinks and tobacco by 3.8 percent.

On the other hand, sales of motor vehicles and parts and of  fuels decreased by 24.4 percent and 4.5 percent respectively.

Commenting on the growth, a government spokesman said the  positive growth reflected continued revival in both local consumer spending and visitor spending from the earlier Severe Acute  Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) impact.
