Oscar-nominated British actress Kate Winslet gave birth to her second child, a son, just before Christmas.

The 28-year-old star and her Oscar-winning movie director husband Sam Mendes welcomed Joe Mendes into the world in New York on December 22.

He tipped the scale at 3.5 kilogrammes.

Ms Winslet has a three-year-old daughter Mia by her former husband, British film director Jim Threapleton.

She is best known for her role in 1997's blockbuster "Titanic," for which she was nominated for an Academy Award, and for her performances in "Sense and Sensibility" and "Iris."

Mr Mendes, 38, won the best director Oscar for 1999's "American Beauty".

The couple married secretly in the West Indies in May.
